Marks
An Exhibition of Contemporary Drawing
22 November through 4 January

Juror's Statement

Drawing is a good place to take chances. These are gutsy works by artists who are able to draw with conviction and, at the same time, without Complacency. That can be difficult balance. You get good at something and naturally the struggle diminishes, but it is the struggle, especially against your own limitations, that produces interesting results.

Ultimately, it is line quality that counts. Marks. Good marks are energetic, active, and eccentric. They activate negative space and bring the surface to life. They provoke, startle, and probe.

These works remind us that mark making is an ancient, but still vibrant, part of the on-going human discourse that defines our social and individual selves.
