The Capacity:

The Art Center can accommodate special events for as few as 50 people or as many as 850. The capacity for a stand-up event is 450 in the main hall or 600 if the entire Art Center is used. For a seated event with tables, the main hall can accommodate 220, while theater seating on the main floor is available for groups of up to 350. Capacities vary with event set-ups. Additional arrangements may be made to rent the bricked area directly behind the Art Center. If this space is used, it is, almost always, required that a tent be erected for your event.

The Ambiance:

Built in 1918 to manufacture torpedoes like the one displayed on the first floor, this striking three-story building retains its identity in daylight as a former factory with exposed pipes, ductwork, and smokestack. The walls and unusual mushroom shaped columns, built to send the roof flying upward should a torpedo accidentally detonate, remain white. While new railings combine blue paint and steel, bright yellow lighting fixtures are industrial-style, and studio doors are painted in playful colors. The building includes a dramatic two-story atrium surrounded with a balcony and divided by two catwalks. These overlook the main hall which measures approximately 150-by-25-feet.

After hours, the Art Center transforms into a unique and distinctive space. Spot lighting creates the desired mood while guiding the eye toward the rich collection of fine art created by over 160 artists, displayed in the 82 studios and six galleries. Add your own personal touch with your choice of flowers, music, and food.

A charming deck area behind the Center invites guests to take a stroll along the Potomac River. Bricked terraces may be tented to extend the space for a larger group or special evening under the stars.

Catering, Parking, and Other Practical Matters:

You may select your own caterer or choose from our list. The enclosed loading dock and fully accessible kitchen offer convenience for caterers. Dancing and amplified music are permitted. Guests may choose to use the parking garage directly across the street or other nearby lots. Advance arrangements can be made for guests to leave the Torpedo Factory by the riverside doors to walk along the Alexandria city marina directly behind the Art Center. The entire building is accessible to persons with disabilities.
