Minds Wide Open

The Torpedo Factory Art Center and The Art League present special programming and events for Minds Wide Open 2010, celebrating women in the arts.

2010 Spring Calendar

Thursday, March 11
Minds Wide Open Regional Launch Event
Torpedo Factory Art Center
6-9pm, Free event

The Torpedo Factory Art Center invites visitors to celebrate the launch of Minds Wide Open, a statewide celebration honoring contributions by women to arts and culture, with thousands of special events occurring throughout Virginia. The Torpedo Factory will host the regional launch event for Northern Virginia, and the evening will feature special speakers, receptions for exhibitions featuring women artists, and modern dance performances.

This event will take place during the Torpedo Factory's Second Thursday Art Night. Studios and galleries will be open until 9pm, and visitors are invited to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments.

February 27 - March 28
Past Forward, An Exhibition of Four Former Torpedo Factory Artists
Barbara Rachko, Joyce Zipperer, Anne Laddon, and Kathleen Dustin

Target Gallery
An exhibition honoring four former Torpedo Factory resident artists. These four women will exhibit their latest works, from Rachko's pastel paintings, Zipperer's sculptures, Laddon's oil paintings and Dustin's polymer clay pieces.
Reception: March 11, 6-8pm o Artists' Talk: 7pm

HerStory Exhibition
The Art League Gallery
HerStory is an exhibition that honors and explores personal stories and experiences about and relating to women throughout history, in the present, or in the future.

Rosemary Feit Covey, Peep & Strip Show Exhibition
The Art League Gallery
Peep & Strip Show is a solo exhibition of printmaker Rosemary Feit Covey. Her provocative images force the viewer into the role of voyeur, either by demanding the viewer to observe her engravings through a peep show box, or on a photographer's light box. Suggestive rather than overtly explicit, her wood engravings subtly deal with obsession on many levels.

April 8 - May 3
Fierce Sonia, Paper Dolls Exhibition
The Art League Gallery
Paper Dolls is a solo exhibition of photographer Fierce Sonia. Joe Chiocca band, Old Town's favorite band, will play during the Opening Reception and reunite with special guest singer Kim Kenny.

May 1- May 30
WomanMade Exhibition
Target Gallery
An all-media juried exhibition exclusively for female artists. Lillian Fitzgerald, curator and art consultant, is the juror for this show.
Reception: May 13, 6-8pm; juror talk with Lillian Fitzgerald at 7pm

Teresa Oaxaca, Solo Exhibition
The Art League Gallery
A Solo Exhibition by painter Teresa Oaxaco.

An all media exhibition with works that will focus on the female figure.

Female Shorts: Film & Video Showcase
Target Gallery
Target Gallery and The Art League are joining forces to sponsor the Torpedo Factory Art Center's first national and international female independent film showcase. A selection of films and video will be on view in the Target Gallery and at The Art League Duke Street Annex. Our juror is Sydney-Chanelle Dawkins, award winning filmmaker and Chair of the Alexandria Film Festival on behalf of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts.
