Studio Space - Annual Jury for Torpedo Factory Artist Members

March 2 - 5, 2009

3D Results: The 3D jury selected three artists.

Saaraliisa Ylitalo
Jessica Beels
Carlos Beltran Baldiviezo

The jurors appreciated the broad range of media represented. The accepted works impressed the jurors as "original, fresh, unseen, and not derivitive" and of high technical merit.

The process of shaping a body of work hampered some artists. The jury's message to all artists was, "If you're really in it, you're really in it. Painful as it is, we all go through it."

The jurors wished for a Torpedo Factory in every city.

2D Results: The jurors did not select any 2D work this year.
One instruction we give the jurors every year is that they are free to select any number of artists they wish; they may select all, some, or none. Unfortunately, this year they chose none.

After an exhaustive review of each work submitted, the jurors said overall quality was good and technical quality in much of the work was high. However, they looked for work beyond technical expertise to see why artists made certain artistic decisions, to find personal voice in each artist's body of work. One juror said these applicants are "my fellow laborers," but was waiting for the invitation to go beyond the surface. They perceived preoccupation with technique and formal qualities to the neglect of a more personal conceptual vision.

The jurors said the jurying process was "as thorough as it gets." They agreed that they "can't imagine a more fair, even-handed approach." Different jurors are invited each year; artists are encouraged to apply again.
