Richmond Artist's Work Focuses on Attention, Memory
Alexandria, VA-Target Gallery, the national exhibition space of
the Torpedo Factory Art Center, is proud to host an exhibition by
Richmond sculptor Andy Holtin from October 8 through November 16,
2003. The exhibition, entitled Reach, includes several mechanized,
kinetic sculptures that concern the act of attention. Holtin was
chosen for a one-artist exhibition from over 70 national candidates
during Target Gallery's annual Open Exhibition competition. A reception
and gallery talk will be held on Thursday, October 9, from 6-9 PM.
The exhibition and reception are free of charge and open to the
public.
Reach will
include large pieces that focus on human systems of attention and
memory. In Circle Time Machine, a mechanical arm draws a circle
with an attached dry erase marker. Following just seconds later
is a second arm holding an eraser that wipes away the fresh mark.
Says Holtin about his work, "somehow, whenever we look at things
and remember things, we find a way to make sense of it, to keep
track of it, to explain the experience." Works like Circle
Time Machine are a means of formally visualizing this internal sorting
of information and memory, what he calls "the cartography of
our perception and experience."
As an emerging
artist, Holtin has several notable achievements under his belt,
including the Outstanding Student Achievement Award at the International
Sculpture Center (2002). He was featured in Sculpture Magazine in
October 2002. Holtin has been a visiting lecturer at Carnegie Mellon
University, and is an adjunct faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth
University and George Mason University.
