Fiber on View in Material World Exhibit
Target Gallery, the national exhibition space of the Torpedo Factory
Art Center, will host Material World: An Exhibition of Contemporary
Fiber from January 8 through February 15, 2004. The exhibition includes
pieces from 21 artists from across the United States and abroad.
Renowned fiber curator Bruce Hoffman and award-winning fiber artist
Cynthia Boyer selected works for the exhibition. A reception and
gallery talk will be held on Thursday, January 8, from 6-8 PM. The
exhibition and reception are free of charge and open to the public.
Over 600 works
from across the country and Europe were submitted to Mr. Hoffman
and Ms. Boyer for consideration-ultimately, only 29 were accepted.
Mr. Hoffman is the director of esteemed craft gallery Snyderman-Works
in Philadelphia. His biennial Fiber Invitational at Snyderman is
widely considered the preeminent exhibition of contemporary fiber
in the United States. In additional to her career as a fiber artist
and designer, Ms. Boyer has an extensive private collection of contemporary
American craft. In selecting works for the Target exhibition, they
wanted to represent the wide range of trends in contemporary fiber.
