Robert Fry : Recent Sculpture
October 9 through November 17

Robert Fry creates simple forms out of reclaimed wood, adding elements like scraps of metal, small patches of bright red paint, or nautical rope to create contrast and complexity.

The artist's skill makes these basic materials into thought provoking sculpture. In Negative Space, long square rods extend through all sides of an open metal and wood cage, drawing attention to the negative space within the cage at the same time they deny that space. His continual use of both human-made and organic materials forces a comparison of their formal differences and similarities. Martin Puryear and Andy Goldsworthy are key influences on the artist.

Fry has had one-person exhibitions at numerous galleries and university museums including the Weston Art Gallery at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati, Case Western University, Denison University, and the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts in New Castle, PA. His sculpture has twice been featured in the International Sculpture Exhibition at Chicago's Navy Pier. The artist is also the recipient of a full fellowship for the Vermont Studio Center, a Kentucky Arts Council fellowship, and a purchase award by Wright State University.

Target Gallery is located on the ground floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town, Alexandria, VA. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5 PM. Target Gallery exhibitions, including Robert Fry: Recent Sculpture, are sponsored in part by the Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.
