Marks
Contemporary Drawings On View in Target Gallery
Local Washington, D.C. artist Rex Weil selected all works.

Target Gallery, the national exhibition space of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, is proud to host Marks: An Exhibition of Contemporary Drawing from November 22 through January 4, 2004. The exhibition includes 30 pieces from 17 artists from across the United States. A reception and gallery talk will be held on Thursday, December 11, from 6-8 PM. The exhibition and reception are free of charge and open to the public.

Over 500 works from across the country and Canada were submitted to Mr. Weil for consideration. Weil is a well-known artist in Washington, D.C., the Washington correspondent for ArtNews magazine, and a professor at the Corcoran School of Art. While his own work tends towards sculptural mixed media, he feels that "mark making is an ancient, but still vibrant, part of the on-going human discourse" and he welcomed the opportunity to select work for the show. Artists were asked to stretch their traditional definitions of "drawing". As a result, the works include not only pencil and ink on paper, but also embroidery, burnt paper, ceramics, and paint mediums.
