2009 Open Exhibition Winner
Renee van der Stelt • Projections: Line on Land
Exhibition Dates: October 28 - November 29, 2009 • Reception: November 12, 6-8pm • Artist's Talk: 7pm
When the Target Gallery was conceived by the artists of
the Torpedo Factory Art Center in 1987, it was tasked with
a mission to feature emerging and established artists from
all over the country in shows that would engage and challenge
the viewer. Twenty-two years later, Renee Van der Stelt's
exhibition continues the Target Gallery tradition while
pushing the space into a new direction never before seen
in the gallery.
Annually, Target Gallery has an open exhibition slot in which artists across the nation are invited to submit exhibition proposals to a panel of jurors for a chance at a solo exhibition. The three-person juror panel of outside art experts is comprised of at least one professional artist/art professor, one art historian/curator, and one collector or critic. This year’s distinguished panel included Lia Newman, Director of Exhibitions for Artspace in Raleigh, NC with expertise in sculpture, Paul So, Founder of Hamiltonian Artists in Washington, DC, with expertise in painting, and Philippa Hughes, Founder of the Pink Line Project, DC Arts Commissioner, and avid art collector. The panel unanimously chose Renee Van der Stelt as the exhibition winner.
A large portion of the work in this exhibition, and featured in the corresponding catalog, are from the artist’s recent residency with the prestigious Roswell Artist in Residence in Roswell, New Mexico. While at the residency, she focused on the land use of that geographic area, specifically the mineral resources available there. Her work examines how drawing can affect and shape space. For this exhibition, she is showing approxime 18-20 sculpture/drawings that are produced through cutting, puncturing the paper and then using light to describe and define the space with a reference to maps, flight patterns, wind and water currents and examining land use. A few of the works on exhibit will be from the artist’s research with the City of Alexandria’s Archeology Museum, located in the Torpedo Factory Art Center, examining land use in Alexandria.
The Target Gallery, national
exhibition space of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, is
located on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria, VA.
