In2Words: Numbers

From June 10 through July 18, 2004. The exhibition includes pieces by 14 artists from across the United States. Established curator and Washington, D.C. resident Sarah Tanguy selected all of the works on view. A reception and gallery talk will be held on Thursday, June 10, from 6-8 PM. The exhibition and reception are free of charge and open to the public.

Numbers is the first part of a two-part exhibition scheduled in Target Gallery this summer. The second show, In2Words: Words, will examine the use of language in contemporary art. Ms. Tanguy's selections in Numbers focus on methods of calculating and measuring. Frank Raczkowski's installation Point Five uses hundreds of small mechanical levels to record site-specific architectural details. Trina Badarak's The Solution II is an abstract painting that uses floating formulas to comment upon the difference between knowing and understanding. Local artists in the exhibition include Virginia artists Dominique Samyn-Werbrouck and Beverly Ryan, and Maryland artists Harriet Lesser and Cory Wagner. In2Words: Words, juried by Krystyna Wasserman, curator of Book Arts at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, opens on July 24 and runs through August 22.
