ACTS of ART

November 28 through January 6, 2002

Acts of Art is an exhibition of work by twelve female New York City photographers that includes a wide variety of photographic techniques from traditional gelatin prints to more experimental digital imagery. A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday, December 13, from 6-9 PM. Several of the photographers will present a talk about alternative photographic techniques on the night of the opening.

Four of the twelve artists met in 1985 during a class on Alternative Processes at the International Center for Photography in New York. They continued to meet monthly after the course ended to share ideas and critique each other's latest work. Eventually, eight other photographers joined the group, expanding the circle of influence and shared techniques. Among the methods used by the photographers in Acts of Art are platinum-palladium, gum dichromate, image transfer, collage, and mixed media sculpture. Show organizer Catherine Steinmann explains that each artist uses her own technique to enhance a particular view of the world. For instance, she uses more traditional platinum-palladium prints in order to, "emphasize the timeless nature of things." Steinmann specializes in landscapes. While some of the members, such as Steinmann, Jennifer Newman, and Grace Sutton, focus on formal aspects of photography, others are more ideological in their goals. Louise Orkin's computer generated images of her own fiber sculptures are feminist in scope. Margaret Casella's digital photographs from the series In Your Face provide social commentary on the singular lens through which television forces the audience to witness American life.

The Target Gallery is the second venue for Acts of Art, which was shown in late spring of 2000 at the Callahan Center of St. Francis College in Brooklyn. A catalogue, which includes images of each work in the exhibition, is available for $10.

Out of the box will be on view Wednesday through Sunday, from 12 noon to 5 PM through September 30. All work in the exhibition is for sale. For further information, call Claire Huschle, Target Gallery coordinator at (703) 838-4565, ext. 4.
