Layers: Juror's Statement

It was an honor to have the privilege to review 687 works of art submitted for consideration for this exhibit by 249 artists from 42 states and Canada. The wide range of media, creative thought, and visual energy displayed in the works, combined with the outstanding execution by the artists of their ideas, made selecting this exhibit a real challenge.

Just as the artists went through a thought process for which works of art to submit in relation to the LAYERS theme, I constantly was seeking an understanding of how the "works explored the notion of layers and layering, whether literally, figuratively or psychologically in art". The vast range of works of art submitted, inspired me to create an exhibit that presents as many different artists, media, and ideas as I could fit within the restriction of the gallery space. This exhibit is crowded with ideas.

My priority to present diversity has resulted in a very eclectic visual experience for the gallery visitor. It is my hope that those who visit the gallery will become engaged themselves in the process of thinking about LAYERS. The "layers" we experience in life are like this exhibit - complex, comforting, mysterious, humorous, protective, surprising, thoughtful, beautiful and all filled with wonder if we stop to discover them.
