What is the UNconventional Convention?
This convention focused on how to start and operate visual
arts centers for the benefit of both artists and the public.
It was held at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria,
VA on May 21 and 22, 2004. This conference was sponsored and
organized by the Alliance for the Advancement of Community
Visual Art Centers (AACVAC) with associate sponsorship by
Americans for the Arts, Partners for Livable Communities,
The National League of Cities, the Friends of the Torpedo
Factory Art Center, and Home & Design Magazine.
The exciting program featured five panel sessions with experts
and representatives from the following fields: Cultural Tourism;
Visual Art Center Prototypes; Architectural Renovations and
Occupational Health Considerations; Community Outreach and
Support; and Self-Governance. One of the main goals of the
conference was to examine the economic and cultural advantages
of public visual art centers. As well as to learn from established
organizations and provided existing centers an opportunity
to compare experiences. This two-day program included a closing
night celebration that coincided with the Torpedo Factory
Art Center's 30th Anniversary. The Torpedo Factory is one
of the oldest and most successful public visual art centers
in the United States.
