In recognition of this movement, artists are encouraged to use everyday objects, advertising, comic books, and cultural references in their work. The Pop Art movement originated as a reaction to the Abstract Expressionist movement.

Target Gallery presents Identification, an all-media self-portrait exhibition exploring alternative definitions of self through the juxtaposition of the artists’ objective and subjective identities. Artists are asked to submit a standardized 4×4 photo of themselves to exhibit along side of the artwork. Our juror is Dara Engler, artist and Assistant Professor of Painting at Ithaca College.

Avis Fleming’s one-artist show of etchings, lithographs, monotypes, paintings and ceramics features landscapes of  Ireland, Maine and Louisiana and birds, people and dogs. It opens May 1 through June 30 at Printmakers Inc. Reception Sunday, May 4, 2-4 p.m.

In celebration of the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s 40th Anniversary, a group of artists will transform the Target Gallery into a community library. Constructed from repurposed and locally sourced building materials, this Library of Alexandria will feature a diverse array of public arts programming. While on the one hand serving to archive and share TFAC’s rich history as a creative place, the exhibition also questions newly emerging modes of both art making and arts funding.

This is an Open Call for proposals for an exhibition in the summer of 2014. This call is open to all artists from North America working in all visual media. Proposals for exhibitions by both individuals and groups will be considered. The individual or group associated with the chosen proposal will receive a solo exhibition at the Target Gallery from July 19th – August 31st, 2014. The artist(s) will also receive a stipend and an exhibition catalog.

Hacking Objects of Desire

Curator: Kade Twist

Sámi artist and architect Joar Nango, and Sámi Poet and Writer Sigbjørn Skåden, investigate Sámi design traditions and indigenous pragmatism through contemporary processes of hacking and re-appropriating everyday consumer objects to better reflect Sámi worldview and the experiential realities of local geographies and contexts — effectively transforming appendages of globalization and neoliberalism into vehicles of self-determination. The exhibition consists of video, sound, text and sculpture.

Post-Photography: Beyond the Print

Reception: Thursday, November 13th, 6-8pm; Juror Talk at 7pm

Target Gallery explores the future of photography with the exhibition Post-Photography: Beyond the Print. This exhibition investigates alternative applications of photography and challenging new contexts for creating images. Submissions are open to all-media artwork that involves an innovative approach to the photographic medium, including, but not limited to, photo-manipulation, stop-motion video, mixed media collage, artist books, photographic sculpture, alternative process photography and GIF art. 

December 6th – January 17th, 2015

Back by popular demand, this small works show is a juried exhibition that invites artists to submit work that cannot exceed 5” in any directions. This is an all media exhibit open to all artists nationally and internationally.
