Elke Seefeldt
has over twenty years
of pottery experience and has studied and worked in Germany,
Canada and the United States. Her interests lie in primitive
pottery techniques, and her current focus is on making pinched
and coiled forms that are hand-burnished with stones and then
smoked in a variety of substances (for example, leaves, pine
needles or sawdust). These techniques result in unique pieces
with distinctive shapes and smooth surfaces that are subtle,
yet striking. In addition to the handbuilt forms, she also
creates pieces on the pottery wheel that are then pitfired.
This process of "painting by fire" gives each piece
a sense of timelessness and peace.
Another technique involves fuming in saggars,
i.e., a thrown form will be packed into another container
together with sawdust, grasses, seaweed, salts, etc. This
will then be fired in a reducing atmosphere and yield unique
results.
