Phyllis J. Roderer - specializing in Raku, Horsehair and Smokefired Art Pottery.- has been a juried member of the Torpedo Factory since 1995. She received much of her training in pottery at the Art League School and credits Dennis Davis of the Torpedo Factory for introducing her to the art of Raku. Most recently she has introduced the horsehair and smoke-fired pottery to her line of work.

"My current fascination with horsehair and smoke-fired pottery comes from my deep respect and admiration for the Southwest American Indian pueblo potters. I feel somehow connected to the spirit of these potters as I painstakingly burnish the fragile round shapes to a smooth satin finish. And the warm monotone colors that are achieved by firing with organic materials spark fond memories of my visits to the sun-drenched hills of Taos and Sante Fe. My intent is not to copy the art of the Pueblo potters. I wish only to open myself to their spirit and allow that influence to guide me as I work with the clay and contemplate our universal connection this planet we call Earth."

"Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children." Ancient Indian Proverb
