I like visual anomalies, little burst of surprise. In 1997, (before I became a painter), I was delightfully jolted by a Lorenzo Lotto painting at the National Gallery. "Presentation at the Temple"appeared to be a typical Renaissance piece until I noticed the table legs had human feet. The delight of that moment has stayed with me and informed my style.
I was a published novelist and food writer for 20 years before I discovered I could paint. Much of my interest in food and humorous oddities has apparently carried over into my art. My subject matter reflects my interests in food, old boats, Asian influences and, most especially, the quirky. |
