Ann McDowell first came to the Torpedo Factory in l985 at the founding of the first photography gallery, Factory Photoworks (now Multiple Exposures). In l993-4 she was asked to sublet for the summer in Studio #17 on the first floor. When that artist left the Art Center, Ann moved permanently into #17 where she worked and exhibited until she and her husband Charley moved to Va. Beach in 2009.
In studio #17, she worked with several photographic processes: black-&white infrared images, hand-colored infrared, a large-format vegetable series, images made from Polaroid prints, cyanotype (blue-print) prints on large watercolor paper, and pictures made from 1930's home movies. Eventually the hand-coloring led Ann back to painting, a pursuit from an earlier life, and most recently to incorporating collage into paintings. She had several one-artist shows and was in countless juried exhibits.
She says "I miss the studio, the Art Center and the artists terribly, but I am beginning to paint again after a year and a half of getting settled. Moving is the pits! I strongly advise against it".
Her work is available,at prices ranging from $100 for small pieces, to $1500. |
