Joyce McCarten has lived in Northern Virginia all of her adult life. She was the daughter of a military officer and attended 13 schools before attending Penn State University. She was born in Japan and lived in France as a child. Though her studiois in Falls Church, Virginia, she has traveled the world in search of the colors, surfaces, and structures that satisfy her artistic eye. She has painted and taught art classes in Africa, China, Europe and all over the U.S. Her favorite places are Italy and Montana in the U.S.
From small plein air paintings, McCarten uses her imagination and her skills as an experienced artist to make large abstract oil paintings. Her intention is to convey a sense of place or a feeling.
