Once my paintings were about wild landscapes whose pristine beauty stopped me in my tracks. As I observed the land changing radically over the years, I began to draw and sculpt a different scene. Everywhere I see connections between an altered terrain and the often absent people who transform it.
Inspiration for my 2010 solo exhibit "Altered Terrain" comes from an exploration of the natural world, relationships between humanity and other living creatures, 17th century Dutch paintings of wealthy sea merchants, and the Dada thinking. Likewise my drawings and collages are metaphors for American culture and commerce. Figures dominate drawings, become a composite of the world around me, and reveal associations that a viewer might not have seen before.
The fun is in trying out unusual combinations of forms and solving the mysteries of the links between them. In the end, most of my work reveals a reality that goes beyond the natural world we perceive, because of the atypical juxtapositions of elements within each composition. Works of several series as well as related drawings can be seen on my Second River Studio website. www.secondriverstudio.com
My life is pieced together too as I work in my studio, teach at the Art League School, garden, grandmother and exhibit work in the many places that form the landscapes of our country: including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Montpelier Cultural Arts Center, Catholic University (Washington, DC), Hoyt Institute of Fine Art (PA), Grounds For Sculpture (Hamilton, NJ), Woman Made Gallery (Chicago), Visions Gallery (Albany, NY), Nevin Kelly Gallery and principally at Touchstone Gallery, Washington, DC.
2-D work ranges in price from $80 to $1600. Sculptures range from $350-$2000
