Matthew Harwood
is a watercolorist whose
work reflects his interest in the relationship between architecture,
nature, and light. Harwood was trained as an architect, then
turned his attention to painting and travel where he finds
most of his inspiration. His work consists of landscape watercolors
and three dimensional watercolor assemblages. The Washington
Post writes that his work "...captures the interplay
of blinding light and deep shadow so typical of summer in
the Mediterranean countries." Mark Leithauser, Chief
of Design of the National Gallery of Art, said "Harwoods
artistry springs from a tradition of architect transformed
to painter. His work has a strong perspective and cleanness
of line
what makes his work exciting is the highly
inventive sculptural approach he takes with his presentation."
Harwood's paintings have been
shown in numerous solo and group shows in museums, galleries,
and special exhibitions. In 1997, he won the Torpedo Factory
Artist of the Year Award. His works hang in many private and
corporate collections. He has maintained a studio at the Torpedo
Factory Art Center since 1984 and can be reached there most
days. For Price quotes, please call or email.
