Viviane de Kosinsky, master etcher, uses Rembrandt’s method of freehand line drawing directly onto copper and zinc plates which are immersed in nitric acid. A select few of these black line original etchings are painted in watercolor with very small brushes, creating mixed media works in the tradition of hand-tinted 19th c. book illustration. Each painted work is unique.
Trained by Swiss, Italian and American professors, Ms. de Kosinsky has lived in Italy and London. She holds degrees in Printmaking and Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design, the Villa Schifanoia Graduate School of Fine Arts in Florence, and the International Graphics Institute in Venice. She studied photography in Florence and has maintained a darkroom for over 30 years.
Specialty subjects include Paris, Italy, English gardens, cats and dogs, sheep and bears, cafe life, theatres, food and chefs. Her etchings have won awards worldwide in numerous international art societies. In 2004 she received an Award of Excellence from the World Federation of Miniaturists at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
