Penelope Barringer has created and shown lithographs and monotype prints in the Washington area for more than 30 years .In 1983 she founded, with Allen Kaneshiro, Discover Graphics Atelier, Inc., a printmaking workshop in the Torpedo Factory that provides classes and working space for area printmakers. She serves as Director of the non-profit organization. Over the past 20 years she has taught lithography, etching, and monotype classes for the Art League, Inc. as well as offering specialized intensive workshops in etching, monotype, and collagraph techniques. She previous worked at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, as Assistant Printmaker and at Union Printmakers, Inc. as Assistant Director.

Mrs. Barringer earned her BFA degree from Syracuse University in fabric design in 1968. She began printmaking in 1972, learning the craft through study and collaboration with numerous teachers and such distinguished printmakers as Joseph Goldyne, Robert A. Nelson, and Lynd Ward. She also has studied enameling with Dorothea Stover and Don Viehman, metalwork with Gretchen Raber and Nick Barnes.

Ms Barringer works primarily in lithography, monotype printmaking and cloisonné enamel jewelry. Her flowing organic images are inspired by natural forms.
