Visual art comes alive at the Torpedo Factory during the Alexandria King Street Art Festival!
The Sketchbook Project
(Open both Sat. & Sun. from 12-6pm)
Meet the founders of the Sketchbook Project and visit the Mobile Library — their custom-built bookmobile — along with a selection of 4,500 sketchbooks from the permanent collection. They will be featuring books from their Memoir Project and participants will be reading portions of their memoirs live on Sunday, Sept. 8th from 3-5pm.
Get-A-Head Papier Mache Activity
From Noon-4pm on Sat., join Torpedo Factory artist Lisa Schumaier in creating CAPGROSSOS! Famous in festivals across Spain and Latin America, "Capgrossos" or "Cabezudos" are iconic, oversized, papier maché heads made especially for parades and community celebrations, like Art Activated! This family friendly activity is sponsored by the Art League.
Live Classical Music
At 2pm on Sat., the U.S. Army String Quartet, a premier ensemble of the U.S. Armed Forces, will perform works by American composers including Barber, Piston, and Harris. The quartet members for this performance are SFC Marlisa Woods, SSG Hannah Eldridge, SSG Nick Hodges, and SSG Grant Parsamian.
